Surf at Kimmeridge

Within a short walking distance of Smedmore House lies beautiful Kimmeridge Bay.  It’s a surf paradise, famous for its rock pools, fossils, water sports and very safe swimming. Overlooked by beautiful Clavell Tower, a Georgian folly and famous Dorset landmark, the beach is mainly rocky shale.  The whole area is of huge geographical interest and surrounded by cliffs.   These clearly show how the rock formation came about with its fascinating layers of shale.  Down below, the sea has eroded numerous wave platforms from the harder limestone. These ledges allow you to walk out and enjoy the fossils which are clearly visible. It helps you to take in the expansive bay with its imposing cliffs stretching away onto the horizon.

Kimmeridge Bay is also famous for water sports and is one of Dorset’s best most sought after bays for surfing and wind surfing. For surfers, it offers Dorset’s premier reef break, Broadbench, which can hold waves of up to 15 feet along with other waves in the “K-Bay” area. The clear water is also excellent for swimming and snorkelling.

Smedmore House has a Boat House down on the shore for use by house guests.  Its the perfect place to base yourself for a day at the beach, an evening BBQ or just toSmedmore BBQ Base watch the sun go down with a drink.  For special occasions, it can be rented by people not staying in the house.  (Enquire here)
